The Black Hole Duffel 55L is a 55-litre Patagonia duffel bag, for a long weekend or a longer trip if you pack neatly. At 6 pm on Friday it goes in the car boot; on Sunday evening it waits on the wet platform, and its shoulder straps put it on your back when the walk to the cottage drags on. Its 900-denier fabric, laminated with a recycled film, takes the hold and hurried baggage handlers in its stride.

What fits inside

55L

Three packing cubes, and room to spare.

It takes roughly three 14-litre Black Hole Cubes (sold separately), with room left around them. Two storage spots in all: a mesh pocket under the lid for papers, and a zipped side pocket that also opens into the inside, handy for grabbing a jumper, though a padlock on the lid then doesn't lock the whole bag.

900denier, the thickness of the yarn

The fabric

900 denier: three times the fabric of the MLC.

  • 100% recycled polyester ripstop, laminated with a recycled TPU film (a flexible plastic) with a matt finish.
  • Padded base. It protects the contents when the bag is set down on hard ground or gravel.
  • Factory. In Vietnam, in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory. The lining is bluesign® certified.

Is the Duffel 55L waterproof?

It handles a shower without being waterproof: the fabric is laminated with a TPU film, but the seams aren't taped. In a thunderstorm, get it under cover.

Does the Duffel 55L fit in the cabin on easyJet, Ryanair or Air France?

No, it's made for the hold: 58 cm long, 3 cm more than the Ryanair and Air France cabin bag limit (55 cm), 2 cm more than easyJet's large cabin bag (56 cm). For the cabin, the Duffel 40L, 50 cm long. Check with your airline.

Does the Duffel 55L have a shoulder strap?
