The Black Hole Duffel 70L is a 70-litre Patagonia duffel bag that swallows a week of luggage, at least. On Saturday morning it takes the hiking boots, the warm layers and the stove; in the evening it waits at the foot of the mountain hut, and its removable shoulder straps put it on your back for the last kilometre. Its 900-denier fabric, laminated with a recycled film, takes the hold and the car park floor in its stride.

What fits inside

Four cubes at the bottom, and room to spare on top.

It takes roughly four 14-litre Black Hole Cubes (sold separately) at the bottom, with room above for layers or gear. In the lid, mesh pockets keep small things; on the side, a zipped pocket opens inside as well as out.

100% recycled polyester ripstop, laminated with a recycled TPU film (a flexible plastic) with a matt finish.

It handles a shower without being waterproof: the fabric is laminated with a TPU film, but the seams aren't taped. In a thunderstorm, get it under cover.

Does the Duffel 70L fit in the cabin on easyJet, Ryanair or Air France?

No, it's made for the hold: 66 cm long, 11 cm more than the Ryanair and Air France cabin bag limit (55 cm), 10 cm more than easyJet's large cabin bag (56 cm). For the cabin, the Duffel 40L. In the hold, the weight allowed depends on your ticket: check with your airline.

Can the Duffel 70L be carried on the shoulder?

No, it has no shoulder strap: on your back, with its removable padded shoulder straps, or by hand with its reinforced handles. With no hip belt, keep the backpack carry for the walk from the car to the hut.
