The Black Hole MLC 45L is a 45-litre Patagonia cabin backpack, designed to the maximum cabin size of most airlines. On Friday evening it leaves the office on your back, goes through the security gate on your shoulder, and opens flat like a suitcase on the hotel bed. No wheels, no telescopic handle: all the space goes to your things.

The MLC is designed to the maximum cabin size of most airlines. Soft-sided, it squashes into the locker when it isn't overstuffed; stuffed to bursting, it bulges.

The zip runs all the way round the bag: clothes lie flat on one side, small things go in the lid pockets. A rough guide rather than a promise: enough for a week if you travel light, with the laptop kept apart in its own compartment.

100% recycled polyester ripstop, laminated with a recycled TPU film (a flexible plastic) that makes it weather-resistant. The Black Hole duffels go up to 900 denier.

It handles a shower without being waterproof: the fabric is laminated with a TPU film, but the seams aren't taped. In a thunderstorm, get it under cover.

Does the MLC 45L fit in the cabin on easyJet, Ryanair or Air France?

On easyJet, yes, as a large cabin bag (56 × 45 × 25 cm, paid option). On Ryanair (55 × 40 × 20 cm, Priority), it's 1 cm too tall; on Air France (55 × 35 × 25 cm), 1 cm too tall and 2 cm too wide. Never under the seat. Being soft, it squashes down if it isn't overstuffed; check with your airline.

Does the MLC 45L have an outside pocket for a passport or a water bottle?

No, there's no zipped pocket or bottle holder outside: everything goes in the main compartment, with two organiser pockets and a top pocket for small things. For a water bottle within reach, the Mini MLC 30L has a stretch mesh outside pocket.
