Deuter · Updays 24 SL
Off before daybreak, racing the clock: 24 litres for the essentials.
You glance at your watch at the foot of the last slope: the skis are already across the pack, the shovel waiting at the front in its compartment. Cut for a 38 to 48 cm back, the Updays 24 SL sticks to the essentials: its skins come out at the bottom, without taking the pack off.
Ski touring · Fast ascents · SL fit

Deuter
Augsburg, 1898: mailbags first, then backpacks.
Hans Deuter opens a canvas workshop in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is soon sewing mailbags for the Royal Bavarian Post. In 1938, the first ascent of the Eiger North Face is made with a Deuter pack on the climber's back.
In 1984 came Aircomfort, a tensioned mesh that holds the pack away from your back. The Futura series took it up in 1999, and the Futura Pro carries it today.
Deuter guarantees its packs for 2 years against defects in materials and workmanship, on top of the legal guarantee, then repairs them at a shared cost. For a pack bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.
Eiken's take
- Why we chose it
- 680 g on a short back, and yet the shovel gets its own reinforced compartment: it's the pack for racing the clock uphill, when every stop counts.
- Worth knowing
- 47 cm tall for 24 litres: with a thick down jacket and avalanche gear, it fills up fast.
- Who it's for
- For heights of 1.58 to 1.78 m, in fast ski touring: early-morning starts, ascents against the clock, the essentials and nothing else.
Baptiste, Eiken

Questions
What sets the Updays 24 SL apart from the Updays 26?
The fit: the 24 SL is aimed at a 38 to 48 cm back (height 158 to 178 cm), with a harness shaped for a woman's body. It loses 4 cm in height and 2 litres, and weighs 30 g less (680 g). The ski attachment, avalanche safety compartment and bottom compartment are the same.
What height is the Updays 24 SL for?
It's made for a height of 158 to 178 cm and a 38 to 48 cm back. It measures 47 × 29 × 21 cm (height, width, depth, pack full) and weighs 680 g empty.
Where do the skins go in the Updays 24 SL?
In the bottom compartment, which is easy to reach: skins, ski crampons or boot crampons come out without taking the pack off.
What load should you carry in the Updays 24 SL?
Recommended load: 4 to 8 kg. If you need to take a rope, two ice axes and snowshoes, the Freescape Lite 24 SL (950 g) is made to carry more.
Is the Updays 24 SL waterproof?
No, it isn't made for rain: in steady rain, water gets in through the seams and zips. Put anything that mustn't get wet in a pouch.
