Deuter · Trail 23 SL
A via ferrata along the way, the lanyard on the shoulder strap: 23 litres.
At the foot of the cable, you keep the pack on: the carabiners of your lanyard wait on the loops of the shoulder straps. The SL fit shortens the back and follows the shape of a woman's body; against you, the Airstripes back touches only through its pads, and air has been flowing through the channels between them since the bottom of the path.
Hiking · Via ferrata · Day hikes
A shorter back, ventilated from the car park to the cable.

Best for
Built for day hikes, cabled sections included.
Hiking gets the top rating; mountaineering and climbing don't go above 2.

What fits inside
23L
23 litres that open wide: the whole day fits inside.
The zip runs round the top of the pack and opens it wide: you find the first-aid kit without emptying the rest. Inside, a zipped pocket for keys, and an elastic compartment for a hydration reservoir up to 3 litres or a soaked T-shirt. Outside, a zipped pocket on top, a stretch front pocket and two side pockets.
- A jacket, a warm layer and the picnic
- A hydration reservoir up to 3 L, in the elastic compartment
- Keys and papers, in the zipped inside pocket
Within reach
A cap on the front, poles on the side, a hip belt that folds away.

In the rain
The late-afternoon storm: the cover goes over the pack.
Not made for rain
No rain protection
In steady rain, water gets in through the seams and zips: anything that mustn't get wet goes in a pouch.
Water-repellent
Water-repellent main fabric
Water beads up on the fabric. In steady rain, it eventually gets through at the seams and zips.
Cover included
A rain cover comes with the pack
A removable rain cover comes with the Trail 23 SL.
This bag
IPX4, once closed
Coated fabric, taped seams
With the roll-top rolled and closed, the contents are protected from rain and splashing water (IPX4 standard). Not from immersion.
Without its cover, it won't get through a day of rain: keep the cover in the pack.

Deuter
Augsburg, 1898: mailbags first, then backpacks.
Hans Deuter opens a canvas workshop in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is soon sewing mailbags for the Royal Bavarian Post. In 1938, the first ascent of the Eiger North Face is made with a Deuter pack on the climber's back.
In 1984 came Aircomfort, a tensioned mesh that holds the pack away from your back. The Futura series took it up in 1999, and the Futura Pro carries it today.
Deuter guarantees its packs for 2 years against defects in materials and workmanship, on top of the legal guarantee, then repairs them at a shared cost. For a pack bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.
Eiken's take
- Why we chose it
- A shorter back that stays ventilated, a pack that opens wide and loops for your lanyard: a day's hiking, via ferrata included, without changing packs.
- Worth knowing
- Recommended for 158 to 178 cm: if you're taller, the longer back of the Trail 25 will suit you better.
- Who it's for
- If you're 158 to 178 cm tall and your walking days take in cabled sections.

Questions
What are the dimensions and weight of the Trail 23 SL?
50 × 25 × 19 cm (height, width, depth, pack full) and 970 g, for 23 litres. Recommended load: 4 to 7 kg.
Is the Trail 23 SL waterproof?
It isn't waterproof, but its rain cover is included: in steady rain, water eventually gets in through a pack's seams and zips, hence the cover. Anything that has to stay dry also goes in a pouch.
Trail 23 SL or Trail 25?
Same pockets, same Airstripes back, same cover. The Trail 23 SL has the shorter back, 38 to 48 cm, for heights of 158 to 178 cm; the Trail 25 adds 2 litres and 50 g, with a back of 44 to 54 cm, for 170 to 195 cm.
What's different about the SL fit?
It's the women's fit of the Trail: the back is shorter and the harness shaped for a woman's body; the Trail 23 SL is recommended for 158 to 178 cm. The pockets, the cover and the Airstripes back are the same as on the Trail 25.
What hydration reservoir fits the Trail 23 SL?
A hydration reservoir up to 3 litres, in the elastic inside compartment, which also takes a wet piece of clothing.
