Topo Designs · Global Briefcase 20L
By hand, on the shoulder or on your back: 20 litres for the office.
The Global Briefcase is the Topo Designs laptop briefcase that carries three ways: by hand with its handles, on the shoulder with its strap, on your back once the backpack straps come out of their pocket. During the week, your 15-inch travels in its padded compartment to the meeting. On Friday, it sits on the handle of your wheeled suitcase and crosses the station concourse without weighing on your shoulder.

Laptop
The 15-inch has its own padded compartment, closed by its own zip.
The laptop compartment is separate, with a zip of its own: you take the 15-inch out without opening the main compartment or the front pockets.

In the rain
From the station to the office in a shower: the laptop in a case.
Not made for rain
Recycled nylon fabric
In steady rain, water eventually gets through: anything that mustn't get wet goes in a pouch.

Water-resistant
Water-resistant fabric
The water-resistant fabric copes with a shower; in steady rain, water eventually gets through.
Water-repellent
PFC-free water-repellent finish
A PFC-free durable water repellent (DWR) finish makes water bead up on the fabric. It doesn't make the bag waterproof: in steady rain, water eventually gets through.
Before heading out into steady rain, slip the laptop into a case.
Topo Designs
A sewing machine in a Fort Collins basement, in 2008.
Jedd Rose buys a sewing machine and sews the first bags in his basement in Fort Collins, Colorado; Mark Hansen asks around for people who can make them.
The two founders wanted gear like the kit they grew up with: tough, practical, classic, the opposite of throwaway and overcomplicated. The same bag goes from the city to the trail.
Topo Designs guarantees its bags against defects in materials and workmanship for a reasonable lifetime, excluding normal wear, accidents and lack of care, and would rather repair than replace. For a bag bought from Eiken, the claim goes through us.
Eiken's take
- Why we chose it
- A separate compartment for the 15-inch, three ways to carry it and a luggage pass-through: the briefcase that ends the week on your back.
- Worth knowing
- The compartment stops at most 15-inch laptops: with a 16-inch, measure it before you order.
- Who it's for
- The meeting in hand, the walk to work on your back, without changing bags. For cycling every day, it's still as wide as a briefcase: take the Commuter Backpack.

What are the dimensions of the Global Briefcase?
29.2 × 41.9 × 11.4 cm (height, width, depth), for 20 litres.
Is the Global Briefcase waterproof?
No, it isn't made for rain: in steady rain, water eventually soaks through its recycled nylon fabric. Put anything that mustn't get wet in a pouch.
What size laptop fits in the Global Briefcase?
Most 15-inch laptops, in a separate padded compartment with its own zip: it comes out without opening the rest of the bag.
Global Briefcase or Mountain Cross Bag?
The Global Briefcase, 20 litres, takes a 15-inch and can also be worn on your back, its straps stowed away the rest of the time. The Mountain Cross Bag, 14 litres, is carried crossbody or by hand and takes a 14-inch. Both slide over a suitcase handle.
Does the Global Briefcase fit in the cabin or under the seat?
As a cabin bag, its 29.2 × 41.9 × 11.4 cm fit within the 55 × 40 × 20 cm limit. Under the seat, it fits easyJet's under-seat bag (45 × 36 × 20 cm) but not Ryanair's (40 × 30 × 20 cm): at 41.9 cm wide, it's 1.9 cm over. Size limits checked in October 2026: check with your airline.
