Office

For the office, the laptop kept safe in a bag that doesn't look the part.

The Fyn and the Bergen Pro take a 16-inch laptop in 13 to 15 litres. The Helsinki opens from the top, the Aalborg from the back like a suitcase, and the Bergen Ultra keeps two sleeves for two devices.

The Lisbon Pro opens wide at the front and the back, from 26 to 34 litres; the Helsinki Pro keeps room for the gym and the shopping; the Bali Medium handles a night away. The Hellvi Pro Large does the same job on the shoulder, and the Åre Daypack Lite, 700 g with its rain cover, ends the day on the trail.

The laptop

A 16-inch, a 14-inch or a tablet: the bag that goes with it.

Each step gives the largest laptop the sleeve takes; a smaller laptop also fits every bag on the larger steps. When a bag takes a 16-inch MacBook but not a 15.6-inch PC, it says so next to its name.

Sleeve sizes: Kapten & Son data. Bags not listed here have no laptop sleeve.

In town

The metro, the café, the buggy, with or without a laptop.

For a smaller laptop, or no laptop at all. The Lisbon Small and the Bergen Cloud take a 14-inch laptop, the Oslo keeps the phone in its anti-theft pocket. Both Tromso bags are made to go from the office to the buggy; the Tromso Small and the Vallen make do with a tablet.

By bike

For cycling to the office, with or without a rack.

The Helsinki Pro Bike hooks onto the rack like a pannier, brings its own rain cover and goes on your back once you arrive. Without a rack, the Helsinki Pro stays put on your back with its chest strap. The Lund Sleek, in water-repellent smooth PU closed with a hook, does the commute in all weathers.

The brand, as Eiken sees it

Clean city bags, designed in Cologne, free of animal-derived materials.

Kapten & Son is a German brand based in Cologne. It designs city bags with clean lines, mostly in recycled polyester, with no leather or other animal-derived materials. The same model often changes material, not silhouette: recycled fabric, quilting for the Cloud, smooth PU for the Sleek.

2-year legal guarantee of conformity, handled directly by Eiken. 30 days to change your mind.

Eiken's take

Why we chose it
On a city bag, the real question is the laptop: here, every bag states the size it takes, from 16 inches down to a tablet.
Worth knowing
These are city bags, not rain bags: none of them is waterproof; for a downpour, the Åre Daypack Lite and the Helsinki Pro Bike carry their own cover.
Who it's for
People who carry a laptop every day and want a bag that sits well in a meeting, then at the café.

Questions

Before you choose a Kapten & Son bag.

Which Kapten & Son bag for a 16-inch laptop?

For the office: the Fyn, the Bergen Pro, the Helsinki, the Aalborg and the Bergen Ultra, which has two sleeves. For long days: the Lisbon Pro, the Helsinki Pro and the Hellvi Pro Large, on the shoulder. For travel: the Lisbon Duffles and the Bali Pro. By bike: the Helsinki Pro Bike. The Lund Sleek takes a 16-inch MacBook, not a 15.6-inch PC.

Lisbon Pro, Lisbon Small, Lisbon Duffle: what's the difference?

The Lisbon Pro is the office bag that grows: 26 to 34 litres and a 16-inch laptop. The Lisbon Small does the city, from 18 to 24 litres, with a 14-inch. The Lisbon Duffles are travel bags carried on your back: 33 litres in the cabin, 50 and 70 litres in the hold. The Lisbon Crossbody, A5 size, keeps the essentials.

Which Kapten & Son bag fits in the cabin?

Almost all of them: our Kapten & Son backpacks fit a 55 × 35 × 25 cm cabin allowance, except the Lisbon Duffle Medium and Large, which go in the hold, and the Lund Sleek, which needs 55 × 40 × 20 cm. Under the seat (40 × 30 × 15 cm): the Fyn, the Bergen Pro, the Bergen Cloud, both Tromso bags and the Vallen. Allowed sizes vary by airline: check yours.

Are Kapten & Son bags waterproof?

None of them is waterproof. The Lund Sleek is water-repellent; the Åre Daypack Lite and the Helsinki Pro Bike carry their own rain cover. In proper rain, protect your laptop.

Backpack or crossbody bag: which one?

A backpack if the laptop comes along every day: both shoulders share the weight. A crossbody or a tote if one strap and quick access matter more than volume. The Hellvi Pro Large, the Hellvi Cloud Medium and the Skara Cloud and Large still take a laptop.

Are Kapten & Son bags vegan?

Yes: no leather or other animal-derived materials in the Kapten & Son bags we sell. Most are in recycled polyester; the Sleek versions are in smooth PU.

What guarantee comes with a Kapten & Son bag?

The 2-year legal guarantee of conformity, handled directly by Eiken: you write to us, we take care of the rest. You also have 30 days to change your mind.

Where does Kapten & Son come from?

Germany: the brand is based in Cologne, where it designs its bags.
